I was so humbled (and nervous!) to be part of something so incredible this past weekend. I was given the opportunity to be a part of the filming of The Heart of the Matter, a documentary focusing on the shame that is involved with pornography use.  When the producer was doing research for this film, she discovered that pornography use is often prevalent in conservative communities. The shame accompanied by it often causes people to feel unable to seek out help, so they remain trapped.

The basis behind this movie is to expose how widespread pornography use is within the conservative Christian community (while speculating why this is true) and to provide a resource for people trapped in this addiction.  For the conservative Christian trapped in this horrible web, shame often keeps them from reaching out for help.  There are not many resources out there for women who struggle with pornography, which is one reason I was so excited to be a part of this.

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed…” (James 5:16).

When things are brought out into the light, healing can begin!

As anyone who has read my blog for awhile knows, I understand this completely. I was one of those people reaching out for help several years ago. It was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. I discovered something right away, though. When I finally broke the silence and reached out to my husband and pastors, the grip it had on my life immediately started to lessen. That’s when my healing began.

This is a subject that I once thought I would keep to myself for the rest of my life.  It wasn’t until God started healing my heart that I wanted to reach out to others to let them know they could also be set free. It’s amazing what God can do in a person who is fully surrendered to Him!  This reminds me of Romans 8:28:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose”.

I feel like God was showing me so much this weekend, and He healed my heart even more.  I was in tears thinking about this on the plane ride home, and I will be writing more about this in next week’s post.  It will never stop amazing me just how much Jesus truly is my Redeemer.
